Froggy pose is done as a composite for safety

Using Composites in Your Newborn Photography Session

By Elizabeth Lang Photography

As a photographer, I love to get creative and make sure your newborn photos are as beautiful and memorable as possible. One of the techniques I use to do this is compositing. If you’re not familiar with composites, they’re when two or more photos are combined in Photoshop to create one stunning image. This technique allows me to capture the perfect shot while ensuring your baby’s safety and comfort throughout the session.

Froggy Pose & Safety

One of the most popular uses of composites in newborn photography is for poses like the "froggy pose." It’s a classic, adorable pose where baby’s hands are under their chin, and their little legs are bent in front of them. However, it requires some support to make sure baby is comfortable and safe. With composites, I can take one shot of the baby in position and then blend it with another image to remove any supporting hands or props, giving you that perfect froggy pose without any distractions. This technique ensures that your baby’s safety is always prioritized while still delivering a dreamy shot.

Group Shots: Making Sure Everyone is Smiling

Let’s be honest—getting the whole family to smile at the same time can be a challenge! If you’re trying to get a group shot with your newborn, I can use composites to ensure that everyone looks their best. I’ll take multiple shots and use the best expressions from each person. If someone blinks or looks away, no problem! I can simply blend their best face with the rest of the family for a perfect, cohesive image. It’s all about capturing those perfect moments, even if they don’t happen all at once. We also call this doing face swaps.

Enhancing Maternity Shots

Composites can also be used to enhance maternity photography. I love using flowing fabric in maternity sessions for that dreamy, ethereal look. If you want extra volume or the perfect windblown effect, I can blend in additional fabric to make your dress look like it’s dancing in the breeze. It’s all about creating that magical look you envision, while making sure the final result is flawless.

Special Elements & Creating Unique Scenes

Sometimes, you might want to add a special touch to your photos, like unique props, floral arrangements, or even your baby in a new scene. With compositing, I can shoot your baby in one setup, like a special beanbag, and then add them into a more elaborate scene or a dreamy floral setup. This gives you the ability to have the best of both worlds: a safe, comfortable pose for your baby and a stunning backdrop to match the vibe you’re going for.

Sibling & Pet Photos

If you want to include older siblings or pets in your newborn session, compositing can be a lifesaver. Babies, siblings, and pets can be tricky to photograph together—especially when they’re all in motion or a little too curious about each other! By photographing the baby, sibling, and pet separately, I can then blend them together into one beautiful, harmonious image. This ensures that your baby, sibling, or pet is in the best position and expression without compromising anyone’s safety or comfort.
