In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know to make your newborn photography session as enjoyable and successful as possible. Here are some things to consider when planning for your session.

When to book your newborn photography session in Surrey. Vancouver.

1. When should you book?

Newborn photos are best taken when your baby is between 4 to 14 days old and up to a few months of age. At this age, babies are typically very sleepy and flexible, making it easier to capture those adorable curled-up poses. Their uniquely newborn features like squished noses, stork bites, flakey skin, only stay a short while. I shoot up to 2 months so any time inside that window is perfect.

If you are considering scheduling a newborn session, it’s a good idea to book it while you are still pregnant. Many photographers recommend reaching out during your second trimester to secure a spot. This gives you peace of mind knowing that your photographer will be available when your baby arrives. Once your baby is born we will pick the next available date for your session. Newborn sessions are held on Saturdays at 10AM.

2. Choose the Right Photographer

Choosing a skilled newborn photographer is key to getting stunning photos. Look for a photographer who specializes in newborn photography and has experience working with babies. You want someone who is not only creative but also patient and gentle with your newborn. If you are interested in having me as your photographer please check my portfolio to ensure my style aligns with your vision—whether you prefer posed studio shots or more natural, lifestyle images.

Don’t hesitate to ask about safety protocols, as newborns require special care. A professional photographer will be trained in safely posing babies and using props and would never put your baby in an unsafe pose. In my studio a parent or my assistant will be within arms reach of your baby during any prop poses to ensure your baby is safe. I started learning about photography in high school and have been working in photography since 2004. I moved from primarily wedding and headshots to newborn and family in 2019.

3. Outfits and Props

One of the fun parts of preparing for a newborn photography session is selecting outfits and props. I provide blankets, wraps, headbands, and hats for the shoot, but you may also want to bring personal items that hold sentimental value.

Here are some tips on clothing and props:

  • Simple and Neutral: Opt for simple, neutral-colored outfits or wraps to keep the focus on your baby’s natural beauty. Soft pastels, whites, and earth tones work well for newborn photography.
  • Textures Over Patterns: Soft textures like knits, crochet, and delicate fabrics add depth to the photos without being distracting. Avoid bold patterns or logos.
  • Personal Touches: If you have something meaningful, like a family heirloom, a special blanket, or a cute stuffed animal, I would love to include these in your session. I love including sentimental items from home! Please send me a photo of your item before your shoot so I can properly plan how to showcase it.
  • Clean Shoes: Please bring clean shoes to change into if you want shoes for your family photos.

For family shots, consider coordinating outfits without being too matchy-matchy. Soft, muted colors work well for family portraits, and everyone doesn’t need to wear the same color, just complementary shades. Don't hesitate to send me photos of your outfits if you want a second opinion.

4. Preparing Your Baby

To get the best shots of your newborn, you’ll want to make sure they’re calm and comfortable during the session. Here are a few preparation tips for your baby:

  • Bathtime Give your baby a bath the night before and make sure to wash their hair. Bring your baby brush along for hair touchups.
  • Active Morning: give your baby an active morning, play with your baby, have a bath, try diaper free time to give your baby some active awake time. The amount will depend on your baby's age. At a few days old your baby will only be awake for very short periods, by 2 months your baby may be awake for 1-2 hours at a time. An active morning can encourage your baby to have a nice nap in the studio.
  • Fed and Sleepy: A well-fed, sleepy baby is essential for a successful newborn shoot. Aim to feed your baby right before the session begins, so they’re relaxed and ready for posing. Many newborn photographers schedule longer sessions (2-3 hours) to allow plenty of time for feeding, diaper changes, and soothing. If you feed right before you leave your house you can also top up when you arrive.
  • Dress in Easy Layers: To make the clothing changes as easy as possible, dress your baby in a simple outfit that can be easily removed without disturbing them too much. Zips and snaps are easier than outfits that pull over the face. When you arrive undress your baby down to a diaper.

Comfort and Temperature: Babies are sensitive to temperature changes, so make sure the room is warm (around 75-80°F or 24-27°C) to keep your baby comfortable during the shoot, especially if they will be photographed without clothing. Although perfect for baby, you will feel hot so please wear comfortable clothing or bring shorts and a t-shirt to change into after your family photos.

5. What to Bring to Your Newborn Session

When preparing for your newborn photography session, it’s important to bring a few essential items to ensure the shoot goes smoothly for both you and your baby. Start with your diaper bag—you’ll want to have everything you might need on hand, such as diapers, wipes, changing mat, and any creams or lotions you typically use. Even if you don’t usually use a pacifier at home, bring 1-3 pacifiers along, as they can be helpful for calming your baby and settling them into poses. The photographer may use them temporarily to help soothe the baby between shots.

My preferred brand of pacifier is the Avent 0-3 month soother with no toys attached.

Make sure to bring extra food for your baby if you are bottle-feeding or plan to nurse frequently. Newborn sessions can last a couple of hours, so you may need to feed more often than usual to keep your baby happy and content. Bring extra bottles or nursing supplies just in case. It’s also a good idea to pack spare clothing for everyone—babies have a tendency to have accidents, so a change of clothes for both baby and parents will help keep everyone comfortable and worry-free. Having all these items on hand will ensure that the session stays on track, and you’ll be prepared for any little surprises along the way! In studio I have the basics available for you such as diapers, wipes, pacifiers, burp cloths, pads etc should you need anything.

6. Preparing Siblings for Photos

Sibling shots are truly heartwarming and often become some of the most treasured images from a newborn session. Capturing the bond between older siblings and the new baby not only creates beautiful memories but also showcases the unique love and excitement they share. Whether it’s a tender cuddle, a playful interaction, or a quiet moment together, these shots often become cherished keepsakes that families hold dear for years to come. In fact, most clients choose 1/3 to 1/5 of their images from their session to be sibling and family photos.

If your newborn session includes older siblings, it's important to prepare them as well, so everyone feels comfortable and relaxed during the shoot. Start by ensuring they’re well-rested and fed before the session begins. A happy, well-fed child will be much more cooperative, especially in an unfamiliar environment. Typically, siblings are included at the start of the session for some family portraits, and then a trusted adult can take them out to play, go to a park, or grab lunch while the newborn photoshoot continues. I have a list of local places you can visit with your older sibling.

It’s essential to remember that this can be a tough time for older siblings. Welcoming a new baby is a huge change for them, and they may feel a mix of excitement, uncertainty, or even jealousy. As a result, they may act out or display behavior that’s not typical of them. Be patient and try not to come down too hard on them during the session. After all, they’re navigating a big shift in their lives, too. To encourage cooperation and make the experience more enjoyable, consider offering small incentives like treats, stickers, or little prizes—something to motivate them and keep their spirits up. I also have a selection of incentives available to make the experience more rewarding for your older children. I like to give a small treat at the end of your session to make sure children leave on a positive note. This can help make sure your children are excited about future photos you may do. Keep the mood light and positive, and remember, this is just a snapshot of a moment in time—it’s okay if things don’t go perfectly! With very young siblings 1yr - 3 yrs sometimes the best we can hope for is for them to simply join the photo so manage your expectations.

7. Prepare for the Session to Take Time

Newborn photography sessions can take anywhere from 2 to 3 hours, depending on how cooperative the baby is. While the photographer works their magic, you may need to nurse, comfort, or even change your baby multiple times. Keep your expectations in check and remember that newborn shoots are relaxed and flexible, with plenty of time for breaks.

I have light snacks and a fridge full drinks for you, as the session may last a while. You might also want to bring a book, a tablet, or something to keep yourself entertained during the longer waiting periods. Or better yet, close your eyes and take a much deserved nap on my clean studio bed.

9.Supporting your baby during your session.

When posing a newborn in props, having a supportive assistant or parent is essential for ensuring the baby's safety and comfort. My assistants Michelle or Lindsay, can provide crucial support by gently spotting the baby to prevent tipping, soothing them with calming techniques like gentle rocking or shushing, and adjusting their position as needed. Their presence also allows you to focus on the photography while ensuring the baby’s head, neck, and limbs are always properly supported. Taking breaks as needed to comfort the baby, using props carefully, and maintaining a calm, safe environment will help create beautiful and stress-free photos.

10.Behind the Scenes Video

During your newborn session, I’ll be capturing not only beautiful photos but also short video clips and behind-the-scenes footage for my social media. These videos offer future clients a glimpse into the process of newborn photography, showcasing the care, patience, and attention to detail that goes into each session. They help potential clients understand how newborn photography works, what to expect, and how we ensure the safety and comfort of their little one while creating stunning images.

11. After the Session

Once your newborn photography session is complete, the next step is the editing process. Expect to receive your unedited proofing photos a few weeks after the shoot. From the proofing gallery you will choose the favourite images to be edited and delivered electronically to you. Your images are guaranteed for 1 month from your shoot date, if any technical errors were to occur your would receive a full reshoot. Please select your images to edit within 1 month of receiving your proofing gallery. After 1 month your gallery will be closed and the photographer will select the best images for you.

12. Don’t Stress!

Above all, remember that newborn photography is all about capturing memories of a fleeting time in your baby’s life. If the session doesn’t go exactly as planned—whether your baby is awake, crying, or needing frequent breaks—don’t worry! A professional photographer will know how to adapt and work with the baby’s natural rhythm. Smiles are a priority for me but cannot be guaranteed. I work to capture your Wishlist shots and poses first but no specific shots can be guaranteed as we are on baby's time! The goal is to have fun, relax, and enjoy this special moment. Your baby’s personality and beauty will shine through, no matter what.
