Maternity Session Preparation Guide: Tips for Expecting Parents
A maternity photoshoot is a wonderful way to capture the beauty and excitement of your pregnancy. It's a celebration of the new life growing inside you, and it’s a chance to document this special time before your little one arrives. Whether you're expecting your first child or adding to your family, a maternity session can be a meaningful and memorable experience. Proper preparation is key to ensuring that your photos are stunning and that you feel relaxed and confident during the session.
In this guide, we'll walk you through everything you need to know to get ready for your maternity shoot, from choosing the right outfits to creating a calm atmosphere, so you can focus on enjoying this special moment.
1. Timing Your Maternity Session
The best time to schedule a maternity session is between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy. During this period, your bump is beautifully round and noticeable, but you’re not yet in the final weeks when you may feel uncomfortable or swollen. Scheduling your session too early might mean your bump isn’t as pronounced, while scheduling too late may limit your energy and flexibility. If this is not your first pregnancy or you are having twins you may show sooner!
Try to book your session early in your pregnancy to ensure you have plenty of time to book in. This gives you enough time to coordinate details like location, outfits, and any props you want to include.
2. Choosing the Right Photographer
When selecting a photographer for your maternity session, look for someone who has experience working with expectant mothers and specializes in maternity photography. A skilled photographer will know how to highlight your bump, create flattering angles, and make you feel comfortable and confident.
Check their portfolio to ensure their style aligns with your vision. Whether you want a classic, elegant session or something more relaxed and candid, find a photographer whose work resonates with you.
Be sure to communicate any specific requests you have, such as particular poses, locations, or any props you'd like to incorporate and send me photos to help me understand your vision.
3. Outfit Selection
Choosing the right outfits is crucial for a maternity photoshoot, as the clothes you wear can dramatically affect the look and feel of your images. Here are some tips for selecting outfits that will make you feel gorgeous and comfortable:
- Fitted, Form-Flattering Clothes: Opt for outfits that accentuate your baby bump and show off your beautiful curves. Dresses that are fitted at the waist and flowy at the bottom create a flattering silhouette, as do form-fitting tops or dresses with empire waists. Right now tight black dresses are in.
- Solid Colors and Soft Textures: Solid, muted colors or soft pastels work wonderfully for maternity sessions. Neutral tones like white, cream, gray, or blush are always timeless. If you want something more vibrant, consider soft jewel tones like emerald or plum. Avoid overly busy patterns or logos that can distract from the main focus of the shoot—your bump.
- Maxi Dresses or Gowns: Flowing maxi dresses or long gowns are a popular choice for maternity shoots because they provide elegance and allow for graceful movement. A gown with delicate fabric like chiffon or lace can add a dreamy and romantic feel to your images.
- Barefoot or Heels?: For some shots, going barefoot adds to the relaxed, natural vibe. However, if you’re looking to create a more polished look, you can wear stylish heels. Just make sure you're comfortable, especially if you're in your third trimester. If you are wearing heels I recommend you wear them for the shot and take them off to reduce the risk of falling. You can also wear them for sitting or laying down poses only.
- Layering and Accessories: If you're planning to take photos in cooler weather, layering with a cozy cardigan, shawl, or denim jacket can add dimension to your look. Accessories like a floral crown, long necklaces, or a simple bracelet can also enhance the overall aesthetic.
- Basics: Simple basics such as unbuttoned jeans, over sized sweaters, tank tops, a blouse or bra and underwear are all perfect to add to your session.
For couples or family maternity photos, try coordinating your outfits without being too matchy-matchy. Opt for complementary colors that create a harmonious look. Read more about: WHAT TO WEAR TO YOUR MATERNITY SESSION.
4. Hair and Makeup
Many expecting mothers choose to get their hair and makeup done professionally for their maternity session, especially if they want to feel extra pampered and glamorous. If you’re doing your own makeup, go for a natural, glowing look that enhances your features without feeling too heavy. Consider a bit of extra highlighter or a soft blush to give your skin a radiant glow.
For hair, consider soft waves, an elegant updo, or a simple hairstyle that makes you feel comfortable and beautiful. Avoid drastic changes (such as a new haircut) just before your shoot—stick with a style you’re used to that makes you feel confident.
A good photographer will often help guide you through poses that showcase your bump beautifully, but feeling your best will translate into more natural, glowing photos.
5. Bring Important Items
For your maternity session, make sure to bring a few important items along to ensure the shoot goes smoothly:
- Water and Snacks: It's important to stay hydrated and keep your energy up during the session. Bring a water bottle and some light snacks (like fruit or crackers) to keep you feeling refreshed. I have light snacks and a variety of drinks for you.
- Comfortable Shoes: If you’re planning to move around or take photos in different locations, pack a pair of comfortable shoes or sandals to wear between shots.
- Touch-up Kit: Bring some makeup for touch-ups (such as powder, lipstick, or a compact) in case you need to freshen up during the session.
- Props: If you want to incorporate any props (like baby shoes, ultrasound images, or a special blanket), make sure to bring them along. Please send photos of any props you are bringing so I can plan ahead.
- Supportive Partner or Friend: Bring along your partner, a friend, or a family member who can help with hair, outfit adjustments, or anything else you might need during the shoot.
6. Prepare for the Session’s Length
Maternity photo sessions typically last between 1 to 2 hours, depending on the location and how many different looks or outfits you want to include. Keep in mind that these sessions can involve a lot of standing, posing so comfort is key. Take breaks as needed and drink water, and if you start to feel tired, please tell me! I am a mom and I have been there too so I understand.
Make sure you have enough time between the photoshoot and any other commitments so you’re not feeling rushed or stressed. It's also a great idea to have a talk with your partner and let them know they will be occupied for a few hours.
7. Creating the Right Mood
Maternity photos are often intimate and emotional, so creating the right mood is important for the session. Try to relax and enjoy the moment—remember, these photos are a celebration of the journey you're on, and the more at ease you feel, the better your photos will turn out. Be sure to communicate any concerns or preferences with your photographer, and don't be afraid to ask for guidance on posing if you feel unsure. Let me know which music you want to listen to to help you get in the mood for photos.
If you’re including your partner in the shoot, make sure to take some time to connect and enjoy the process together. Candid moments of affection, laughter, or quiet connection often make for the most beautiful shots.
