Photographing Multiples: Newborn Photography with Twins and Triplets

By Elizabeth Lang Photography – Surrey, near Vancouver

As a newborn photographer, there’s always an element of surprise and joy in every session. But when it comes to photographing multiples—whether it’s twins, triplets, or even higher-order multiples—it takes everything up a notch. Newborn photography with multiples presents unique challenges, but those challenges are part of what I absolutely love about capturing these precious moments. The reward? Beautiful, timeless photos that document the unbreakable bond between siblings and the magical dynamic of a growing family.

Photographing twins or triplets requires patience, precision, and creativity, but it’s also an incredibly rewarding experience. It’s an honor to witness these tiny babies interact with each other and their parents, and I treasure every moment spent capturing their first days together.

The Challenge of Photographing Multiples

If you’ve ever wondered why photographing multiples is so tricky, it’s all about timing, coordination, and, of course, sleep. One of the biggest challenges is getting all babies to sleep at the same time—a crucial element in creating those peaceful, serene newborn shots that so many parents love. When you’re working with two or more babies, it’s a delicate balancing act of calming each one, ensuring they’re comfortable, and finding that moment of stillness where everyone is peacefully resting.

Newborns need sleep to look their most angelic, and with multiples, it’s almost like a race against time. As soon as one baby falls asleep, the other might stir, which means I need to be extra patient, quick, and strategic in setting up each shot. It’s a process of gently soothing them, adjusting the props, and waiting for the perfect moment to snap that perfect shot.

While it can be challenging, the satisfaction of capturing that perfect shot—where both (or all) babies are peacefully sleeping, snuggled together in a cozy blanket or gently posed in a delicate prop—is incredibly rewarding. The calm beauty of those moments is worth every ounce of patience it takes to create them. Another big challenge is having enough hands! When working with twins you absolutely need help from an assistant or parent. With triplets that's another set of hands you'll need.

Capturing the Unique Bond Between wombmates

Beyond the logistical challenges, photographing multiples is also deeply emotional and meaningful. Twins and triplets share an incredibly unique bond that starts from the very beginning. There’s something so special about documenting that connection early on, when they’re just starting to adjust to the world outside the womb.

With twins, I love capturing them snuggled up together, their tiny hands reaching for each other, or even just resting peacefully in the same position, mirroring each other. The connection is so natural, and it’s a beautiful sight to see.

For triplets, the bond is even more profound. I often find myself capturing moments where all three babies are gently posed together, one baby nestled between the others, creating a beautiful visual of their closeness and shared experience. The sweet interaction between them—whether it's holding hands, snuggling, or just lying side by side—reminds me of how powerful sibling connections are, even at such a young age.

Timing is Everything: Posing Multiples with Care

When it comes to posing multiples, it requires an extra layer of attention. The key is to create a safe, comfortable environment for each baby while positioning them in a way that emphasizes their connection. I use props like baskets, cozy blankets, and soft pillows to keep babies comfortable while positioning them gently.

In some cases, I’ll photograph them individually as well as together, giving each baby their moment to shine while still showcasing the sibling bond. This approach ensures that we get a variety of shots—some that highlight the babies together and others that show their individual personalities.

Sometimes, I’ll even incorporate subtle props or elements that highlight their shared bond such as matching outfits.

The Rewards of Photographing Multiples

Despite the extra effort and coordination required, photographing multiples is always worth it. There’s something so magical about the moments when everything falls into place, and I can capture those peaceful, intimate images that families will treasure forever. The sleep-filled, serene moments of babies side by side, the gentle way they hold hands or curl up together, and the adoring glances of parents as they hold their two (or three) little miracles—these are the moments that make the entire process so rewarding.

As a photographer, seeing those little faces in perfect harmony is a reminder of how special these early days are. For parents, those photos will serve as a cherished memory of their babies’ first moments and the love they share from day one.

Why I Love the Challenge

The beauty of photographing multiples is the challenge itself. It pushes me to think creatively, be patient, and adjust my approach to capture the perfect shot. There’s a certain thrill in waiting for that sweet moment when all the pieces come together. And the final result—those timeless photos—are worth every ounce of effort. It’s a challenge I welcome with open arms because the rewards are simply too precious to pass up.
