Addressing Common Concerns About Booking a Newborn Session: Tips from Elizabeth Lang Photography

Welcoming a newborn is an incredibly special time, but it can also be filled with overwhelming moments, especially when it comes to booking a newborn photoshoot. As a mom and experienced photographer, I understand the challenges that parents face during these early days. Whether you’re exhausted, feeling self-conscious, or worried about sibling dynamics, I’m here to help you navigate the process with ease and confidence.

1. What if I feel unattractive post-birth?

I know how challenging it can be to feel your best after having a baby. Your body has just gone through a huge transformation, and it’s completely normal to feel self-conscious. But rest assured, I’m here to help you look and feel beautiful during your newborn session. I specialize in presenting you in flattering ways that highlight the love and connection between you and your baby, rather than focusing on what you may feel insecure about.

You can wear something comfortable like a stretchy dress, or even a maternity dress, which works wonderfully for postpartum bodies. Most moms still have a baby bump after delivery, this is completely normal! I also have a small selection of dresses that are perfect for postpartum tummies, along with flowing fabrics that work beautifully for mother-and-baby shots. Remember, the focus is on your bond with your newborn, not on what you're wearing. If you're more comfortable in something simple, a black shirt and pants are always a great choice.

2. What if I’m exhausted and overwhelmed with the baby?

It’s completely normal to feel overwhelmed and tired after bringing a newborn into your life. During the session, I want you to relax and enjoy the process, so feel free to wear something cozy and comfortable. Assign Dad or another family member to take care of older siblings while we focus on your newborn. This gives you the chance to relax, grab a snack, or even take a nap if needed while I capture the sweet moments with your little one.

3. What if my older child has a meltdown?

Introducing a new sibling can be a huge adjustment for older children, and it’s totally normal for them to feel a little overwhelmed or act out during the photoshoot. As a mother myself, I’m sensitive to this change and approach every session with patience. I suggest having Dad or a family member take older siblings out after the family portion, maybe to a park, to the local free museum, the local library or to McDonald's for a special treat. This gives everyone a moment to relax, while I focus on baby photos. After family photos I encourage you to relax and nap if you would like to.

4. What if my baby won’t sleep during the session?

A common concern is that the baby may not sleep, but honestly, that’s okay! Awake babies are just as beautiful—those bright eyes and tiny expressions are moments that grandparents especially love to see. If your baby is fussy or wide awake I will ask you to feed them then we can gently rock, swaddle, and soothe them. If they’re calm and content, we can continue taking photos. It’s all about capturing your baby’s unique personality, whether they’re asleep or awake.

5. What if my baby has an accident or poops on the wraps?

Accidents happen, and I’m fully prepared for them! Most of the time, newborn photos are done with diapers, wraps, or outfits, so you don’t need to worry about a mess. If we’re doing any poses that involve no diaper, I’m prepared with extra supplies. Everything, including wraps, blankets, and pads, gets washed after each session. I do recommend bringing a spare change of clothes just in case the baby soils your outfit, but rest assured, I’ve got it covered.

You are the most important part of this experience, and I’ll work with you to make sure your session is stress-free and enjoyable. Together, we’ll create beautiful, lasting memories of your baby’s first days, ones you’ll cherish forever.
