A newborn photo session with Elizabeth Lang Photography is designed to be an enjoyable, relaxed experience, and preparation is key to making the most of it. To ensure everything goes smoothly and you’re fully prepared for the day, we’ve created this comprehensive final checklist to guide you through the essentials!

  • Diapers and wipes
  1. Feeding:
  • Prepare to feed more frequently (breast or bottle)

  • The studio will be warm, so wear light layers that are easy to adjust.
  • Bring your photo outfit and clean shoes for your family photos.
  1. Bring Special Items:
  • Include personal items like a favorite blanket, stuffed animal, or family heirloom.
  1. Text When You’re On the Way:
  • Let me know when you’re on your way to help with final preparations.
  1. Plan for 2 Hours:
  • Newborn sessions typically take about two hours—prepare for a relaxed, unrushed experience.
  1. Prepare Siblings:
  • Make sure siblings are fed, rested, toileted, and bring snacks/toys for entertainment.

1. What to Pack in Your Diaper Bag

Packing the right items in your diaper bag will help you feel ready for anything that comes your way during the session. Here’s a quick list of what to bring:

  • Pacifiers – Sometimes babies find comfort in a pacifier during the session, especially if we need to soothe them between poses.
  • Burp Cloths – Newborns tend to have little accidents, and it’s always good to have burp cloths on hand.
  • Spare Clothes for Baby – Accidents happen, so bring at least one extra outfit (or two) for your little one.
  • Spare Clothes for Parents – You may get a little spit-up on your clothes (it happens!), so pack an extra shirt for yourself just in case.
  • Diapers and Wipes – Make sure to bring enough for the session, as we’ll likely be changing your baby during the shoot.

2. Feeding: Prepare to Feed More Than Usual

A well-fed baby is a happy baby, and newborn sessions often take a little longer than you might expect. Whether you're breastfeeding or bottle-feeding, it’s a great idea to prepare to feed your baby more frequently than usual. Babies tend to get sleepy and content after a good meal, and feeding them before or during the session helps them stay calm and relaxed, making the photoshoot smoother.

If you're breastfeeding, you may want to bring a nursing cover and a comfortable pillow for support. For bottle-feeding parents, be sure to have extra bottles and formula or breast milk ready, just in case.

3. Dress in Comfortable Layers (We Keep the Room Hot!)

We keep the room warm and cozy to ensure your baby is comfortable throughout the session. This warmth helps your little one stay relaxed and sleepy, which is perfect for getting those beautiful, peaceful shots.

That said, it’s important for you to dress in comfortable layers, as you may get quite warm while in the studio. Bring light layers that are easy to take off and put on, so you're comfortable during the session.

4. Don’t Forget Your Special Items

If there are any special items or keepsakes you’d like to include in the session—such as a favorite blanket, a stuffed animal, or a family heirloom—be sure to bring them along! These personal touches can add even more meaning to your photos and create lasting memories that will be special for years to come.

Make sure to let me know in advance if you have something specific in mind so I can help incorporate it seamlessly into your newborn shoot.

5. Text Me When You're on the Way

To help us stay on track with timing and be ready for your arrival, please text me when you're on your way to the studio. This allows me to make final adjustments to the setup and be fully prepared to start your session as soon as you arrive. It also helps me accommodate any last-minute changes in timing.

6. Prepare to Be Here for 2 Hours

Newborn sessions typically last around two hours, so please plan for this when scheduling your day. This allows enough time for baby feedings, outfit changes, and getting your little one into those adorable poses. It also gives us plenty of time to work through the session without feeling rushed, ensuring we capture every precious detail.

7. Siblings: Make Sure They're Rested, Fed, and Ready

If your older children will be joining the session, it’s essential that they’re well-rested, fed, and toileted before arriving. We want to make sure they’re in the best mood possible for family photos! Consider bringing snacks, entertainment, and small treats to keep them occupied during any waiting time. You might also want to bring a few extra activities or toys to keep them entertained if we need to take turns during the session.

By following this checklist, you’ll be fully prepared for a smooth, stress-free newborn session that will result in beautiful, timeless photos of your little one. I can’t wait to work with you to create these memories that will last a lifetime.
