Essential Equipment for Newborn Photographers: Setting Up for a Perfect Shoot with Elizabeth Lang Photography in Surrey.

As a newborn photographer, capturing those precious first moments requires more than just skill—it’s about having the right equipment and setup to ensure the session goes smoothly. Whether you’re working in a studio or on location, the right gear helps you control lighting, comfort the baby, and create beautiful images. Here’s a breakdown of the essential equipment you'll need to get started in newborn photography, from lighting to props.

1. Light Source for Newborn Portraits.

Lighting is one of the most important aspects of newborn photography. Proper lighting helps highlight the baby's delicate features, create the right mood, and ensure clear, high-quality images.

  • Strobe Lights: Many newborn photographers prefer using strobe lights to control the lighting in their sessions. These powerful flashes can be triggered remotely by a trigger attached to your camera, allowing you to control the intensity and placement of light. This is essential when you're shooting indoors or need more consistent lighting. Make sure to use softboxes or diffusers to ensure the light is soft and flattering, rather than harsh and direct. I use Einstein lights from Paul C Buff and 2 different diffusion umbrellas.
  • Window Light: If you prefer to work with natural light, positioning your shooting setup near a large window can give you beautiful, soft, and even light. Window light can create a serene and organic look, perfect for newborn photography. However, you must be mindful of the time of day and weather, as natural light can change quickly and may not be consistent throughout your session. I have 3 large windows in my studio for natural window light.

2. Camera Equipment for Newborn Photography.

For any professional photographer, having a reliable camera is crucial. Newborn photographers often use high-quality DSLR or mirrorless cameras with excellent autofocus systems to capture those fleeting moments with precision.

  • Primary Camera: A camera with high resolution and fast autofocus will ensure your images are sharp and clear. My main camera is the Canon R5 mirrorless.
  • Backup Camera: Always have a backup camera ready! Even the most reliable gear can malfunction, and you don't want to miss an important shot due to technical difficulties. A second camera body ensures you can continue shooting without interruption. I have a Canon 5D M2 and 5D M4 as my backup bodies.
  • Accessories: Multiple batteries and chargers, sync cord, multiple memory cards and a variety of lenses (100mm, 50mm, 35mm) I also have reflectors and various other tools. The 50mm is my favourite lens for portraits but each lens is great in its own way.

3. Beanbag for Newborn Posing.

Posing a newborn is one of the most delicate aspects of a newborn photo session, and the staple of the industry. Over the past years there has been a movement towards a firmer surface and several years back I switched to a table with a foam topper.

  • Table Setup: A soft, comfortable beanbag designed specifically for newborns can be adjusted in various ways to achieve the perfect pose. I have a custom built round table that has a rotating surface. My table was built to fit inside my Paloma Schell newborn stand so the fabric can be pulled tight and smooth.

4. Blankets for the Beanbag Posing.

Blankets are a must-have when it comes to newborn photography. They provide comfort, warmth, and an additional layer of texture. Soft, cozy blankets can be used as layering pieces, as backdrops for close-up shots, or to wrap around babies for a snug, secure feeling.

  • Soft Fabrics: Stretchy blankets are the best choices for posing newborns, as they’re gentle on the baby’s skin and can be pulled tight on the beanbag stand for various poses. Layer several thick and stretchy fabrics over your posing pillows to keep the surface smooth.

5. Assorted Props

Props can add personality and charm to a newborn shoot. They’re especially useful for creating themed sessions, seasonal looks, or adding special touches to your photos.

  • Common Props: Buckets, baskets, tiny beds, or even vintage and boho items. It's essential to use props that are baby-safe and comfortable. Every session includes 2-4 props which add interest and variety to your gallery.

6. Wood Planks for Floor Backdrop

If you're aiming for a rustic or natural look, wood planks are a fantastic backdrop option for newborn photos. They create a timeless, organic look that complements the softness of a baby.

  • Wood Planks: You can find lightweight, wooden floorboards or even vinyl floor backdrops that mimic the look of wood. These add texture and interest to the photos while keeping the baby’s focus on the foreground. My wood planks were from an old fence the my neighbour gave me 10 years ago and I still love them!

7. Fillers for Layers

Layering is an essential technique in newborn photography. Using fillers such as blankets, wraps, or cloths helps create depth and dimension in your photos. Fabrics can be found at the fabric store, from prop vendors but you can also buy ladies scarves.

  • Layering Techniques: Light, airy fabrics work well for layering around the baby. You can fold or bunch the fabrics in a way that adds visual interest while still ensuring the baby feels supported and comfortable.

8. Baby Clothes and Headbands

While many newborns are photographed naked or wrapped in a soft fabric, cute baby clothes and accessories like headbands, hats, and booties can add an extra touch of cuteness.

  • Outfits: Keep baby clothes simple, soft, and comfortable. You might consider using neutral colours or light pastels that won’t distract from the baby’s natural features. I have a selection of knitted rompers, baby boy outfits and newborn dresses for girls that are the perfect size for babies 5-10lb.
  • Headbands and Accessories: Cute headbands, bonnets, or soft hats can help complete the look for your newborn session.

9. Sound Machine

Newborns are used to the soft, rhythmic sounds from the womb, so a sound machine can be a lifesaver during photo sessions. It helps to soothe and calm the baby, making them more likely to relax for posed shots.

  • White Noise: Many newborn photographers use white noise or gentle lullaby sounds to create a peaceful atmosphere and help the baby sleep during the shoot. It also helps keep baby asleep if there's any sudden noises from older siblings.

10. Change Pad and Nursing Pillow

When working with newborns, comfort and support are key. Having a change pad and nursing pillow on hand ensures both you and the baby are comfortable throughout the session.

  • Change Pad: A clean, soft surface for changing diapers or positioning the baby between shots is essential. This helps keep things organized and hygienic. I have 2 I use when I'm sitting on the floor and there is a wall mounted change table in the bathroom if you prefer to stand to change diapers.
  • Nursing Pillow: Nursing pillows are available for parents to aid in feeding their baby.

11. Additional Essentials for Smooth Sessions

As any experienced newborn photographer knows, it's always better to be over-prepared than under-prepared. Here are some additional must-have items that make a newborn shoot go more smoothly:

  • Burp Cloths: Newborns tend to spit up, so having burp cloths on hand helps keep things tidy and hygienic throughout the session.
  • Receiving Blankets: Soft receiving blankets are great for wrapping baby while you feed. They’re also good for keeping the baby cozy and secure.
  • Spare Diapers and Wipes: Babies go through multiple diaper changes during a session. Having a stash of spare diapers and wipes is essential to maintain the baby’s comfort throughout the shoot.
  • Soothers and Bottle Warmer: A pacifier can help calm a fussy baby, and a bottle warmer ensures that any milk is the right temperature if you need it.
  • Nursing Pads, and Sanitary Pads: These are for you and the parents, especially for long sessions. It's always good to have nursing pads and sanitary pads for moms, in case they need them during the shoot.
  • Individual Deodorants: If you forget yours I have spares.

12. Snacks and Drinks during your photoshoot

Keeping yourself and the parents energized during a newborn shoot is essential, especially if the session is long or takes place during the day. Offering snacks and drinks can keep everyone comfortable and focused.

  • Drinks: Have a selection of cold drinks like pop, juice, water, and fizzy water available. A Keurig machine with coffee and hot drinks can also be a nice touch for parents need a pick-me-up.
  • Snacks: Snacks like chips, granola bars, and candy can be a quick and easy way to recharge during a long session. Have a variety of options available for everyone to enjoy.

13. Incentives and Rewards for Kids

If you’re working with older siblings during the newborn session, keeping them entertained and engaged is important. Offering small incentives or rewards can keep them calm and cooperative throughout the shoot.

  • Rewards: Small toys, stickers, coloring books, or crayons can help keep kids entertained while the shoot is happening. Offering a fun incentive at the end of the session can also encourage cooperation and a positive experience. If the toy box can make a trip to the dentist exciting then it can work for photos too!

14. A Parent Zone

While you focus on capturing those precious newborn moments, it’s important that the parents are comfortable and have a space to relax. I have a spot for parents to relax during their session.

  • Comfortable Seating: Offer a comfy couch or chairs where parents can sit, unwind, and even watch the session.
  • Wifi and Amenities: Provide wifi, so parents can stay connected, and a place to hang their items up during the session. I want you to feel comfortable and at ease.
  • Studio Bed: I have a clean studio bed that parents can use between shots. The bed is used for your photoshoot but please lay down after the family portraits and take a nap!

Final Thoughts

When you’re photographing newborns, the right equipment can make all the difference in capturing beautiful, timeless images. Strobe lights or window light, a reliable camera system, and supportive props and blankets are just the beginning. By having all your essentials—plus practical items like snacks and rewards—you’ll ensure the session goes smoothly for both you and the baby.

With proper preparation and the right gear, you’ll be able to create stunning newborn photos that parents will cherish for years to come.
