Newborn Photography Session FAQs: Your Questions Answered

Welcoming a new baby into the world is one of the most exciting and beautiful moments in life, and what better way to capture those precious first days than with a professional newborn photography session? If you’re thinking about booking your session at Elizabeth Lang Photography, I understand that you might have a lot of questions! As a mom and a photographer, I aim to make the experience as easy, stress-free, and enjoyable as possible for both you and your little one. Here are some frequently asked questions (FAQs) that I hear from parents, along with my answers to help you feel fully prepared.

1. When is the best time to book my newborn session?

The ideal time to book your newborn photography session is during your pregnancy, ideally after your 20 week ultrasound. This gives us plenty of time to plan your session, discuss any special requests, and ensure that your due date is secured on my calendar.

The best time to photograph your baby is when they are 7-14 days old. During this window, newborns are still very sleepy and curly, which allows us to capture those classic, posed newborn shots. However, if your baby has already passed this age range, don’t worry — we can still create beautiful, timeless images at any and every age.

2. How do I prepare for the session?

Preparing for a newborn session can be simple! Read the NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHY PREP GUIDE Here are a few tips:

  • Feed your baby before the session: A well-fed baby will be calmer and sleepier during the session. If you can, try to schedule your session during your baby’s usual nap time. If you can top up your baby on the drive or right before you leave that is wonderful.
  • Keep your baby awake before the session: Try to keep your little one awake for an hour or two before your session to ensure they’re nice and sleepy when we begin. Don't stress too much about this just have an active morning or assign this task to a family member so you can focus on getting ready.
  • Dress your baby in loose, easy-to-remove clothing: This will help us avoid disturbing their peaceful sleep when we need to change outfits. Please no onesies.
  • Bring along any personal items: If there’s something special you’d like included in the photos (such as a family heirloom, a favorite blanket, or a specific outfit), let me know in advance!
  • Don't forget your diaper bag!

3. Do I need to bring outfits for my baby?

No, you do not need to bring outfits for your baby! I have a selection of small, well-fitting newborn clothes that I use for the session. These outfits are carefully chosen for their softness, comfort, and perfect fit for your little one. Most store bought clothes are actually too large for a tiny newborn.

However, if you’d like to bring something special for the family photo portion of the session, feel free to do so! I always encourage parents to bring coordinating or neutral outfits that will complement the studio setup.

4. What should I wear for the session?

When it comes to clothing for parents and siblings, I recommend neutral or soft tones. Avoid bright, distracting colors or busy patterns, as these can take attention away from the baby. Creams, whites, greys, pastels, and soft earth tones are perfect choices for a natural, timeless look.

For mom, I suggest wearing a simple, flowy dress or a soft sweater. If siblings will be involved, coordinating colors without matching exactly can create a beautiful, harmonious effect.

5. What should I expect during the session?

A newborn session typically lasts between 2 to 3 hours, depending on how well the baby is settled. Newborn sessions require a bit of patience because we work at the baby’s pace. If your baby needs to be fed, changed, or comforted, we take breaks as needed to make sure they’re happy and comfortable.

The session will take place in my cozy, baby-friendly studio in Surrey, which is designed with comfort and safety in mind. I provide a variety of props, wraps, and outfits for your baby, and you’ll be able to relax and enjoy the experience while I capture the beautiful moments.

We’ll also incorporate family members and siblings into the session, as I love capturing the bonds between family members during these early days.

6. Will my baby be posed during the session?

Yes, but don’t worry — everything is done with your baby’s safety and comfort as my top priority. For posed newborn photography, I focus on classic poses, such as tummy time, side-lying and prop poses. I take great care to ensure the baby is comfortable, and I always use gentle support to help them stay in the desired position. If at any point your baby seems uncomfortable, I’ll stop and try another pose. My assistant is always right there laser focussed on your baby. She is there to shush, pat and spot your baby to keep them safe and sleepy.

Most of the time, your baby will be swaddled, keeping them cozy and relaxed. These poses are designed to capture the innocence and beauty of your newborn, but they will always be natural and comfortable for your baby.

7. What if my baby is fussy during the session?

It’s completely normal for babies to be fussy or awake during a session. Babies can’t always be predicted, and they often have their own ideas about when they want to sleep or eat. I’m used to working with newborns, and I’m very patient when it comes to calming your baby and giving them breaks when needed.

If your baby is awake and alert, we can capture beautiful candid moments and natural poses as well. Most parents love the idea of capturing their baby’s bright eyes and awake expressions — they’re beautiful, too!

8. Can my older children attend the session?

Yes, of course! Sibling photos are a big part of the newborn session, and I love capturing the bond between your new baby and their older siblings.

We’ll start the session with sibling photos, so they’re involved right from the start. Older children need a break after the sibling photos, they will leave with another family member or caregiver while we finish up the individual portion of the session. This way, they don’t get restless or bored, and you can fully focus on the newborn session. There are many things to do in Cloverdale to keep them occupied.

9. How long will it take to get my photos after the session?

After your newborn session, it typically takes about 1 week to get your proofing gallery ready for you. You will choose your favourite images to be edited and once you have picked your images it usually takes 1-2 weeks for me to edit the images. I always put a lot of time and care into editing to ensure the final gallery is perfect, and I’ll let you know as soon as your images are ready.

You’ll receive a link to your online gallery, where you can view, download, and order prints. I also offer a range of high-quality print products such as albums, wall art, and canvas prints, so you can showcase your beautiful newborn portraits in your home.

10. Can I upgrade my package after the session?

Yes, absolutely! If you decide after your session that you’d like to upgrade to a larger package or purchase more photos, you are welcome to do so. Once you’ve had a chance to view your gallery, you can let me know which additional images you’d like to purchase, and I’ll take care of the rest.
