Does Your Baby Hate to Be Changed? Here’s Why – And What You Can Do About It
If you're a new mom, you've likely experienced the familiar scene: You go to change your baby’s diaper, or perhaps it's bath time, and as soon as your little one is undressed, they burst into tears. It can feel like your baby suddenly hates being touched, but the truth is, their reaction might be due to something a bit more scientific – the temperature of the room.

Why Do Babies Cry When Undressed?
Babies are used to the warm, cozy environment of the womb, where the temperature is constant and comfortable. When they're born, their little bodies have to adjust to the cooler air of the outside world, and unfortunately, they aren’t able to regulate their own body temperature very well just yet. Babies have less body fat than adults and can cool off quickly, which is why they tend to cry when they’re undressed for a diaper change or bath.
Think about it – you've just exposed them to a much cooler environment, and it’s a shock to their system! This is why they often get upset during bath time or when their diaper is being changed. Their tiny bodies are struggling to stay warm.

What Can You Do to Help?
The good news is that you can help your baby stay warm and comfortable during these necessary daily routines, which might mean fewer tears and a smoother experience overall. Here are a few simple tips that can help:
1. Warm Up the Bathroom Before Bath Time
One of the best ways to ensure your baby doesn’t cry during bath time is to warm up the room. Before you undress your baby, crank up the heat in the bathroom to a higher temperature (around 75-80°F). If you have a space heater, you can use that to warm up the area. This will mimic the warm environment of the womb and keep your little one nice and cozy.
I’ve found that when I do this in my photography studio, my newborn clients don't even cry during their sessions! It’s all about keeping them comfortable in the heat, so they can relax and stay calm.

2. Warm the Changing Area
When you change your baby’s diaper or clothes, make sure the area is warm enough for them. Try using a space heater or keeping the room temperature comfortable so that your baby doesn't feel the shock of the cooler air. A warm, comfortable space will help keep your baby calm during these moments.
3. Use a Heating Pad for the Mattress
If you're putting your baby down for a nap or bedtime, you can warm up their mattress with a heating pad before placing them down. Just make sure the pad is on the lowest setting to avoid overheating. This will create a warm, snuggly spot for your baby to rest, just like the comfort they felt in the womb. This is also a great way to transition your baby from your arms into their bed.
4. Warm Up Baby Wipes
Another small but thoughtful detail is to warm your baby’s wipes before using them. Cold wipes can startle your baby, especially during diaper changes, so getting a warmer for the wipes can make a big difference. This is especially true for nighttime changes when your baby is already groggy and just wants to stay warm and cozy.

5. Why Are Newborn Studios So Warm?
You may have wondered why newborn photography studios are often so warm, and there's a good reason for that. Babies are often undressed to just a diaper, and sometimes wrapped in fabrics for the shoot. The heat helps keep them calm and asleep between changes and poses. In fact, I know the studio isn't warm enough unless I'm sweating! If you can still wear a sweater it's too cold! When babies are kept warm, they tend to stay relaxed and cooperative, making the photo session much more enjoyable for both baby and photographer.

The Takeaway
If your baby seems to cry during diaper or clothing changes, it’s likely because they’re too cold. Their little bodies are still adjusting to life outside the womb, and they can get chilly very quickly. By making small adjustments, like warming the bathroom, keeping the changing area toasty, or even warming the wipes and mattress, you can help create a much more comfortable environment for your baby.
So next time you’re preparing for bath time or a diaper change, try warming up the room and see how much happier your little one is. And remember, a warm, calm baby is a happy baby – and that’s the goal!
