How Do You Book Your Newborn Session Date?

By Elizabeth Lang Photography – Surrey, near Vancouver

When you're expecting a baby, there's so much to plan for. From setting up the nursery to deciding on baby names, it can feel like a never-ending list. One important task you won’t want to overlook is booking your newborn photography session. But how do you book when you don’t know exactly when your baby will arrive? Great question! Here’s how the process works, step by step.

Book Your Session in Advance While You're Pregnant

While it might seem early, the best time to secure your newborn photography session is while you're still pregnant. Ideally, you should reach out after your ultrasound, especially if you're planning for a specific time frame such as the holidays. The earlier you book, the more likely it is that I’ll have availability around your due date.

Once you’re ready to book, we’ll get everything set up with a contract and a retainer payment. This locks in your spot and ensures you’re officially on my calendar. I’ll mark your due date as a placeholder in my schedule, but don’t worry—we’ll confirm the exact session date once your baby is born!

How Do We Set the Exact Date?

Since babies can come early or late, we don’t know exactly when your little one will arrive, which means we don’t set the session date in stone just yet. Once your baby is born, simply reach out to me with a message or a call, and we’ll find the next available slot that works for you.

I know that the first few days with your newborn can be overwhelming, so I always allow flexibility with the exact session date. Generally, newborn photos are best captured within the first 2 weeks after they are born, but if your baby is a bit older or you have other scheduling concerns, I’m happy to work with you to ensure we find the perfect time.

Why Book Early?

Although babies come at different times, booking early ensures that your session is secure and that you won’t miss out on having those precious moments professionally captured. Newborn sessions require careful planning, and my calendar does tend to fill up quickly. By securing your spot in advance, you’re giving me the opportunity to prepare, plan, and ensure I have enough time to devote to your session.

What Happens if My Baby Arrives Early or Late?

It’s totally understandable to feel unsure about the exact timing of your session. Some babies arrive early, and others take their sweet time! No matter when your baby is born, I will work with your schedule to ensure you still get your newborn photography session. We’re flexible about adjusting the date as needed, so even if your baby’s arrival doesn’t line up exactly with your initial planning, we’ll make it work.

What Happens if My Baby Needs Extra Time in the NICU?

If your baby needs a little extra time in the NICU, we treat the day your baby goes home like it's the day they were born. Babies who have had a NICU stay often go home just as newborns do, and we’ll adjust the timing of your session accordingly. Your baby’s health and well-being are my top priority, and I’m happy to work with you to make sure you still have beautiful newborn photos at the right time.

The Bottom Line

Booking your newborn session while you’re still pregnant gives you peace of mind knowing that your spot is reserved. Once your baby arrives, we’ll find the best date that works for both of us. While we can’t predict exactly when your little one will arrive, I make sure my schedule remains flexible so that you can still capture these precious early days.

I know how fleeting the newborn phase is, and I want to ensure that you have beautiful, timeless photos to remember this special time. If you’re expecting and ready to book your newborn photography session, reach out today to get started!
