Becoming a parent and welcoming your first babies

Welcoming Your First Baby: The Excitement, the Unknowns, and the Learning Curve

By Elizabeth Lang Photography – Serving Surrey & Vancouver Families

Bringing your first baby into the world is one of the most exciting moments of your life. It’s the start of a completely new chapter filled with love, joy, and anticipation—but also a fair share of uncertainty and learning. When I think back to the birth of my first child, I remember that perfect combination of exhilaration and a mountain of questions.

The excitement is undeniable, but there’s also so much to figure out! From sleep schedules to nursing techniques, swaddling, and keeping track of milestones, it felt like every new challenge came with a lesson that could easily have been a university course. Each new topic felt like a deep dive, as if I was constantly studying for an exam I didn’t know was coming. It’s overwhelming, and yet, those are the moments that define parenthood, making every accomplishment along the way feel that much more rewarding.

The Learning Curve: Sleepless Nights & Diaper Changes

As you settle into the rhythm of life with a newborn, you quickly realize that there’s a steep learning curve ahead. The days (and nights) can feel long as you navigate the ups and downs of caring for your baby, and it’s easy to get overwhelmed. One thing I’ll never forget is how complex simple tasks seemed at first—like getting my baby to sleep. There were endless questions running through my mind: "Is this normal?" "Is my baby sleeping enough?" "Should they be nursing this often?" It’s a constant process of learning and adapting, and while there is a wealth of information out there, it’s hard to know what’s best in the moment.

One of the most nerve-wracking things as a new parent is leaving the house with your newborn. It feels like an expedition just to make it out the door! I remember packing my diaper bag as though I were heading out on a week-long vacation—there were extra outfits, blankets, bottles, toys, diapers (so many diapers!), and anything else I thought could possibly be needed. I spent so much time preparing for every potential scenario, only to realize that I didn’t need half of it.

Now, with three kids, I’ve come to realize just how much simpler it can be. By the time baby number three came around, my "diaper bag" was basically my regular purse, along with a couple of diapers, wipes, a soother, and a spare outfit. It’s funny how the first baby brings a sense of anxiety and over-preparation, while the third one just brings a sense of “I’ve got this.”

The Anxiety of First-Time Parenting

The first-time parent jitters are real, and they extend into every aspect of your new life. From figuring out how to get your baby to sleep to ensuring they’re fed, safe, and comfortable, there are a lot of unknowns that can make you second-guess your every decision. One area that I see new parents especially worried about is newborn photos. It’s understandable! You want everything to be perfect. You’re navigating so many changes, and now there’s the added pressure of wanting to capture this fleeting moment in time.

But here’s the truth: there’s no "perfect" way to do it. The excitement, the nerves, the learning curve—this is all part of your unique journey as a parent, and it will show in your photos. Those moments of wonder, exhaustion, and love are what make the experience so meaningful.

I want to reassure you that your first baby photoshoot will be an experience you cherish. It’s okay to feel nervous, and it’s okay if everything isn’t perfect. This is your story, and these photos are about capturing the love and joy of your growing family. The way your baby fits into your arms, the little details like their tiny hands and feet, and the overwhelming emotions that come with your first days together—all of these are priceless memories worth preserving.

A New Chapter: The Change into Parenthood

Bringing your first baby into your home is a momentous occasion that changes your life forever. Yes, it comes with challenges, sleepless nights, and a lot of uncertainty, but it also marks the beginning of an incredible journey. The love you have for your child is immeasurable, and each day will be a new adventure as you learn more about each other. While the anxiety may be present in the beginning, it soon gives way to joy, pride, and a sense of fulfillment that only parenthood can bring.

As your photographer, my goal is to make sure you feel relaxed and comfortable during your newborn session, even amidst all the newness and emotions. I am here to help capture those moments of connection—those quiet, tender moments with your baby—so that when you look back at these images years from now, you can remember how you felt when you welcomed your first baby. And believe me, those feelings will stay with you forever.

If you’re ready to capture the excitement and beauty of your newborn’s first days, I’d love to help you create lasting memories that you and your family will cherish for years to come.
