By Elizabeth Lang Photography – Surrey, near Vancouver

When it comes to newborn and family photography, safety is my top priority. I know that capturing the perfect shot often involves delicate posing, working with babies, and creating a calm environment for children to relax. It’s not just about beautiful photos—it’s about ensuring your little one’s safety and well-being throughout the entire session. That's why I’m proud to say that I have first aid and CPR training for infants, something that gives me added peace of mind when working with babies and children.

My First Aid Journey: From School Teacher to Daycare Owner

Before becoming a full-time photographer, I worked as a school teacher and later became a daycare owner. These roles required me to have up-to-date first aid and CPR certifications, particularly focused on infants and young children. Knowing how to respond in case of an emergency helps you to build confidence and that alone can help you to react appropriately and calmly to an emergency situation.

Thankfully I have never had to perform CPR with any children in my care and have only tended to small scrapes.

Why First Aid Training Is Helpful when working or living with kids.

As a newborn photographer, I work with some of the most delicate little humans—your babies. The reality is that babies can be unpredictable, and things can change in an instant. While newborn photography is generally very safe, being prepared for the unexpected is a crucial part of my job. As a parent I think a basic first aid class is something that is great for all parents to do. Especially when you start to introduce solids which can be a nerve wracking life stage. Knowing the signs of choking and how to intervene can give you a little more peace of mind that you will be able to handle any situations that might come up.

Additional Training and Experience for Your Baby’s Safety

In addition to my first aid and CPR training, I also have specialized newborn photography training. This is important because newborns require particular care when being posed or handled, especially when they are only days old. I have learned how to handle babies safely in a way that supports their developing bodies and minimizes any potential risks. This includes using an assistant and who is always there to keep your baby safe.

My experience as a mother has also given me a unique understanding of the needs and sensitivities of newborns. I've been there myself, so I truly understand the importance of creating a safe and nurturing space for both parents and babies during photography sessions.

How First Aid Training Complements My Photography Style

When you book a session with me, I want you to feel as comfortable as possible. It’s not just about creating beautiful memories; it’s about ensuring the experience is safe, stress-free, and enjoyable for everyone involved. Having first aid training gives me a sense of peace as I work with your baby, knowing I am fully prepared should anything unexpected arise.

It also allows me to focus on the art of newborn photography with confidence. The well-being of your child is my top priority, and I want you to feel reassured that I’m taking every necessary step to ensure their safety while capturing these precious moments.

A Focus on Safety and Care at Every Session

Each session I conduct, whether for a newborn, a family, or siblings, is approached with the utmost care and attention to safety. I don’t just focus on the technical aspects of photography—I also ensure the environment is safe and soothing for your little one. I take extra care when it comes to posing babies, ensuring they are supported in a way that promotes comfort and stability. My training in first aid and CPR is just one layer of the safety measures I use to ensure everything goes smoothly.
