Including Your Partner in Your Maternity Session

Capturing the love, excitement, and connection as you prepare to welcome baby.

Pregnancy is a season filled with transformation, emotion, and deep connection—and one of the most beautiful things to capture during a maternity session is the bond between you and your partner. Whether this is your first baby or you’re growing your family, including your partner in your maternity session is a wonderful way to tell the full story of your journey into parenthood.

At Elizabeth Lang Photography, I always encourage couples to be a part of this special moment. These images not only reflect your love and excitement but also create beautiful keepsakes your child will treasure one day—a glimpse into the joy and anticipation that surrounded their arrival.

So, what kinds of photos should you expect with your partner? Here are a few must-have shots that we’ll capture together:

1. The Classic Smile at the Camera

This timeless, feel-good pose never goes out of style. You and your partner standing close, smiling directly at the camera, hands gently resting on your bump—it’s the kind of photo you’ll want to share on Instagram and the one the grandparents will absolutely love. It’s familiar, joyful, and full of warmth—perfect for framing, gifting, and celebrating with loved ones.

2. Stylized, Intense Gaze at the Camera or out of the frame

For a more editorial feel, we’ll get a few shots with both of you giving a confident, direct look to the camera. These images are powerful and emotional—perfect for those who love something bold and dramatic, while still elegant and timeless.

3. Partner’s Arms Around the Belly

This is one of my favorites—a pose that shows how supported and loved you are. Your partner standing behind you, arms wrapped around your belly, often with hands resting over yours or creating a heart shape. It’s a visual representation of the protection, love, and excitement that surrounds your growing family.

4. Backlit and Facing Each Other

When the lighting is just right, we’ll capture that magical backlit moment—usually facing each other with soft smiles or forehead-to-forehead. It’s dreamy, romantic, and filled with connection. These shots are especially beautiful in silhouette or soft focus, highlighting the emotion of the moment.

5. Natural Candid Moments

While we’ll guide you through poses, I also love stepping back and letting you two simply connect. Whispering something sweet, laughing together, or even a quiet moment with heads resting together. These candid shots often turn out to be the most meaningful—real, raw, and full of love.

6. The Kiss

A gentle kiss on the forehead, cheek, or lips adds a beautiful touch of tenderness to your session. It’s a sweet, romantic moment that captures the deep love between you and your partner. Whether it’s soft and subtle or full of emotion, a kiss shot brings intimacy and connection to your gallery—and always ends up being a favorite!

7. Something Playful or Silly

Not every shot has to be serious! I love capturing a playful moment between you and your partner—whether it’s a shared laugh, a funny whisper, or a spontaneous twirl. These lighthearted images bring out your personalities and show the joy and fun in your relationship. They’re often the ones that make you smile the most when you look back.

8. The Belly Kiss

A soft kiss on your baby bump is one of the most tender and heartfelt moments to capture. It’s a beautiful way for your partner to connect with baby and show their excitement and love. Whether standing or kneeling, this pose adds emotion and sweetness to your gallery—it’s a quiet moment that speaks volumes.

9. Announce or Hint at the New Baby to Come

Incorporating a fun reveal or hint about your little one adds a personal touch to your maternity session. Whether it's showing tiny shoes, holding an ultrasound photo, or incorporating gender reveal elements, these shots are a great way to share the excitement of your growing family. It’s a sweet way to subtly announce or tease the arrival of your baby—something you’ll cherish as a meaningful moment in your journey to parenthood.

10. Posh and Elite Fashion

For those who want to elevate their maternity session with a touch of glamour, incorporating posh and elite fashion can make for stunning, high-fashion images. Think elegant gowns, luxurious textures, and refined styling. This style adds sophistication and class to your session, giving you the chance to feel like a true model, celebrating both your pregnancy and your beauty in a chic, fashion-forward way.
