Love You to the Moon and Back: Using Moon Props in Your Newborn Session

By Elizabeth Lang Photography

The phrase "Love you to the moon and back" is a beautiful expression of just how deep a parent’s love can be for their child. It’s a sentiment I love to capture in newborn photography, and what better way to represent that love than with moon-themed props? Incorporating moon elements into your newborn session not only adds a touch of whimsy and magic but also creates a beautiful, celestial atmosphere that perfectly complements the joy and wonder of welcoming a new baby.

There’s something incredibly special about using a moon outline as a prop in newborn photography. Whether it’s a soft, glowing moon as part of the backdrop or a wooden, carved moon prop that gently cradles your baby, these details create a dreamy, peaceful setting. The moon symbolizes something so universal and timeless—perfect for capturing those first precious moments of your baby’s life.

One of my favourite ways to use moon props is with a moon-shaped pillow that babies can lay on. These pillows are both soft and safe, providing a cozy and adorable space for your little one to rest. Posing your baby on a moon pillow adds a whimsical, dreamlike quality to the photos while symbolizing the warmth and protection surrounding your baby. It’s a lovely way to frame your newborn and create a beautiful image full of peaceful energy.

Wooden carved moon props are another beautiful way to bring the theme to life. These unique, handcrafted pieces add texture and warmth to the session, giving the photos a more organic, earthy feel. The contrast of a solid, natural moon and the softness of your newborn creates a striking image full of emotional depth. It’s a perfect blend of nature and wonder, evoking the sentiment of a love that’s larger than life itself.

To enhance the magical feel of your newborn photos, I also love incorporating star props or even star-shaped bokeh light overlays. The soft, glowing bokeh effect creates a dreamy atmosphere that ties perfectly with the moon theme. Star props can be scattered around your baby, or they can act as a charming backdrop, symbolizing the endless sky and the infinite love you have for your little one. These tiny details add a layer of softness and beauty to your photos, giving them an otherworldly, celestial touch.

Whether you choose to use a moon pillow, wooden moon, star props, or light overlays, the moon theme creates a magical foundation for your newborn session. It adds a dreamy, ethereal quality to your photos while symbolizing the boundless love you feel for your baby.
