Do I Need Bottles for My Newborn Photography Session? Feeding Your Baby During Your Newborn Session – Elizabeth Lang Photography

Surrey, BC

As a mom myself, I know firsthand how overwhelming the early days with a newborn can be. One of the biggest stresses? Feeding. Whether you’re breastfeeding, bottle-feeding, pumping, using formula, or a combination of all of the above, it’s completely normal to worry about your baby’s feeding schedule. Are they getting enough? Do they have a good latch? Are they gassy? And the list of concerns goes on. As a new mom, you can feel like you’re constantly juggling—feeding, comforting, and keeping track of everything while also managing the stress of getting out of the house for appointments like your newborn photography session.

But here’s the thing: I’ve been there. I get it. I’m a mom, too, and I understand the pressures of feeding a new baby, especially in the midst of all the other newborn challenges. And I want you to know that when you come to my studio, feeding your baby is absolutely encouraged. Take your time, relax, and know that you don’t need to rush or feel stressed about feeding in front of me. I’ve seen it all and have been through it myself. Let me guide you through this experience so you can feel as at ease as possible during your session.

Feeding Your Baby During the Session

One thing I want to assure you of is that your baby’s comfort and well-being are the top priority during the session. Babies are naturally more relaxed when they’re well-fed and content, and that goes for your newborn photoshoot too. If you need to feed your baby, please do so! There’s no need to feel any pressure to hurry or to skip a feeding just because we’re in the studio. I can easily keep myself busy while you’re feeding—whether I’m editing photos, replying to emails, or simply tidying up the studio. Your baby’s calmness and happiness are the key to getting those beautiful, serene newborn photos that you’ll treasure forever. If we stop a feed for the sake of time it will just work against you because they won't be as happy and content as they would be if they finished their milk.

Be Prepared to Feed on Demand

The early days with a newborn are full of feeding challenges, and it’s normal to feel like you’re constantly meeting your baby’s needs. Because being in a new environment uses more energy for your little one, you may find that your baby wants to eat more frequently than usual. For this reason, I encourage you to temporarily set aside any feeding schedule you might be following and feed on demand during the session. If your baby is hungry, feed them. It’s completely natural and helps keep them calm, sleepy, and ready for those adorable photos.

If you’re formula-feeding, it’s a good idea to bring extra bottles just in case. Babies can sometimes drink a bit more during a photography session due to all the new stimulation. The ready mixed formula is ideal for photo sessions. If you’re breastfeeding, keep in mind that I’m here to make you feel comfortable and supported—whether that means stepping out of the room for privacy or staying in the room while you nurse. I’ve worked with moms in all situations, so whatever you need, I’m here to help.

Don’t Worry About Feeding in Front of Me

As a photographer, I see a lot of things in the studio, and breastfeeding is one of them. Please know that you don’t need to feel uncomfortable feeding your baby in front of me. I’m a mom, too, and I completely understand the process. However, I also know that some moms prefer privacy during nursing, and I’m more than happy to step out of the room and give you space if that’s what you need. My goal is to ensure you feel as comfortable as possible during the session, so don’t hesitate to let me know how I can best support you.

What You Need

Here’s a quick list of things you may want to bring to your newborn session to make sure you’re prepared for feeding:

  • Extra bottles and formula (if bottle-feeding or formula-feeding)
  • A comfortable nursing pillow is available for breast or bottle feeding.
  • Burp cloths are available here (always helpful, especially for those tiny spit-ups!)
  • Extra diapers and wipes  Available here if you forget or run out (you know the drill!)
  • A warm baby blanket (to cover your baby as they are only in a diaper)

It’s always better to be over-prepared than to run out of what you need during the session. The more relaxed and comfortable you are, the better the experience will be for both you and your baby.
