Why I Do Model Calls – Elizabeth Lang Photography
Hi there! I’m Elizabeth Lang, and I’m so glad you’re here! If you’ve been following me on social media or keeping up with my work, you may have seen that I occasionally run model calls for my portrait, newborn, and family photography sessions. These special calls are something I love to do periodically throughout the year, and I want to take a moment to share with you why I do them and how it benefits you as well!
Testing New Equipment, Props, and Techniques
As a photographer, I’m always learning, experimenting, and striving to improve my skills. Whether it's trying out new equipment, exploring fresh lighting setups, or playing with different posing techniques, model calls give me the opportunity to test out new ideas without the pressure of a formal session. Sometimes, I get new cameras, lenses, or props that I’m excited to try, and a model call is the perfect way to give them a spin.
For example, when I get a new set of adorable outfits or props for newborn shoots, I love having the chance to test them out in a real shoot. It allows me to see how they look in photos, how the lighting interacts with the items, and how I can creatively integrate them into my sessions. It’s a win-win because you get gorgeous photos while I get to explore and improve my craft!
Trying Different Styles of Photography
I’ve always believed in evolving as a photographer and trying new things. One of the reasons I run model calls is to test out different styles that I want to explore. Lifestyle sessions, for instance, are something I’ve been wanting to dive into more. These types of shoots are less posed and capture a more natural, candid moment – think cozy moments at home, playing in the park, or those precious everyday interactions with your little ones.
Model calls let me experiment with this style in a relaxed, pressure-free environment while still giving you something beautiful in return. Whether I’m capturing family snuggles or your child’s gleaming smile during a playtime moment, lifestyle photography is something that has been so fun to explore and share with my clients!
New Studio Setups
When I started Elizabeth Lang Photography, I set up my studio with a vision of providing a comfortable and creative space for families to feel at home. As my business has grown, I’ve added new backdrops, props, and even revamping the entire vibe of the studio at times. Model calls allow me to test out these new studio setups before offering them as part of my official packages.
Whether it's a dreamy new floral backdrop or a modern, minimalist design, testing it out during a model call helps me fine-tune the details so I can offer the best possible experience when you book a session with me.
Mini Sessions and Sample Shots
One of the exciting things about model calls is that they allow me to get sample shots for seasonal mini sessions. Things like Christmas Minis, Mommy and Me Minis, or Garden Minis need sample images for my website and marketing, and running a model call helps me gather these shots. It’s also a fantastic way to showcase the vibe and energy of these special events, so you can see exactly what to expect when you book a mini session with me!
Getting the perfect Christmas card shot or a fun photo with your kiddos during a garden shoot is what I love to help families achieve. Model calls are a chance for me to give you a sneak peek of what these seasonal sessions might look like!
Creative Passion Projects
Now, this one is my absolute favorite reason for doing model calls. Photography has always been my passion – long before it became my job. I’m constantly inspired by things I see, whether it’s an idea I spot online, a location I pass by during my daily commute, or a vision I have for a creative shoot. Sometimes, I’ll come across a beautiful outdoor spot that just calls to me or have an idea for a whimsical newborn session that’s been brewing in my mind.
When inspiration strikes, model calls are my way of getting out there and bringing those creative dreams to life. These shoots are often full of excitement and energy, as they’re not tied to specific client requests. I get to experiment, push my creativity, and capture something truly unique. In exchange, the families who participate get free photos, and I get to pursue the projects that feed my passion.

At the heart of it all, model calls are about the magic of creativity and collaboration. You get a chance to receive beautiful, high-quality images for free, and I get the opportunity to experiment, grow, and feed my love for photography.
