Including Your Pets in Your Garden Family Photography Session at Elizabeth Lang Photography

Pets are a cherished part of the family, and it only makes sense to want them included in your family’s special moments, especially when it comes to professional photos. At Elizabeth Lang Photography in Surrey, I absolutely love capturing the bond you share with your furry (or feathered!) friends. With summer garden mini sessions, we can create beautiful memories in an outdoor setting that includes your pets—whether they’re your playful pup, curious kitty, or even a beloved bunny.

If you’re considering including your pets in your upcoming family session, I’m here to help make it a smooth and fun experience for everyone! Here’s everything you need to know to ensure your furry companions are an active part of the session while keeping things relaxed and enjoyable.

1. Friendly and Trained Pets Are Always Welcome!

When it comes to including pets in your family photos, the most important thing is ensuring they’re well-behaved and comfortable in new environments. Friendly, trained, and sociable pets will be the most at ease during our garden mini session, allowing them to participate in the experience without added stress or distraction.

It’s also helpful if your pets are familiar with basic commands like "sit" or "stay." I want everyone to feel comfortable, so the more relaxed your pets are, the better the photos will turn out. If you have a puppy or a new pet that’s still working on training, that’s completely fine too! Just let me know in advance, and we can plan accordingly. Please don't include aggressive pets for the safety of all.

2. Leashed Pets for Safety and Control

For safety reasons, it’s important that your pets remain on a leash during the session. While I want your pets to be a part of the action, it’s crucial that they’re kept under control, especially in an outdoor setting. Not only will this help keep them safe, but it ensures that the focus of the session remains on the people (and pets!) in the photos, rather than chasing after a runaway animal.

Leashing your pets also allows me to help direct them during the session. This is especially important when we’re working in a garden setting, where there may be a lot of exciting new smells, animals, or even the presence of other clients. Keeping your pet on a leash ensures that they remain calm and comfortable throughout the session.

3. Bring Someone to Help with Your Pet (if Needed)

Sometimes, having a second set of hands can make all the difference when including pets in your family photos. If your pet needs extra attention or care during the shoot, bringing a family member or friend to help can help things run smoothly.

If you have a dog that loves to run around, or a curious cat that enjoys exploring, having someone with you can allow me to focus on capturing the perfect shot of your family while your helper takes care of your pet. This also ensures that your furry friend stays calm and content throughout the session, giving you peace of mind during our short but sweet garden mini session. It's also great for a second set of hands to hold your furry friend while we capture some shots without them.

4. Be Aware of the Chickens!

At Elizabeth Lang Photography, our garden space is not just family-friendly—it’s pet-friendly too! However, I do have a few chickens in a coop. While they’re harmless and used to visitors, it’s important to know that the chickens can be exciting for your pet.

If you have a dog, especially, I’d recommend keeping them on a leash if they’re unsure about the chickens. I’ll make sure to keep an eye out and ensure your pet is comfortable, but knowing what to expect will help the session go more smoothly.

5. Garden Mini Sessions: The Perfect Setting for Family & Pet Photos

Summer garden mini sessions are a wonderful way to capture your family in a natural, relaxed outdoor setting. The garden’s lush greenery and vibrant flowers provide a stunning backdrop for photos, and the shorter duration of mini sessions means your pets won’t get too tired or overwhelmed. These sessions are ideal for families looking to create memories in a beautiful outdoor environment, without the pressure of a long, drawn-out shoot.

Whether your dog loves to run in the grass, your cat enjoys lounging in the sunshine, or your pet bunny loves hopping around, the garden offers plenty of space for everyone to enjoy themselves. These quick, enjoyable sessions allow me to capture both posed family shots and candid moments of play, laughter, and connection. Best of all, your pets are welcome to join in the fun!

Tips for Including Pets in Your Family Session

  • Bring Favorite Toys or Treats: Pets love toys, treats, or even a favorite blanket. These items can help keep them engaged and relaxed during the session.
  • Stay Calm and Relaxed: Pets can sense our energy. The more relaxed and calm you are, the more likely your pet will be too.
  • Dress for Comfort: If your pets will be participating, consider bringing a comfortable leash or harness for them, as well as treats and toys that might help during the shoot. Be sure to wear clothing that allows you to move comfortably while holding onto your pet.
